Now we Need Identity Theft Insurance?

Identity Theft Insurance? Well, it's not as strange as it sounds. Hopefully you haven't become a victim of identity theft, but you've surely heard of it. There is research indicating that as many as 16% of adults have already become victims of this crime.

Identity theft can take several forms, but it's usually defined as the use of other people’s personal information for financial gain. Most commonly, the perpetrators of identity theft use the obtained information to make product purchases by applying for credit cards or loans in the other indivual's name

Currently, credit card companies will terminate the credit card account of an individual when he reports the card to be stolen or lost, and the individual is normally responsible only for no more than the first fifty dollars of fraudulent charges, assuming he acts within a reasonable time frame. However, this may minimize the financial fallout from the particular card, but does nothing to stop the thief from using any personal information he's obtained to commit further crimes. Also, with modern technology, the thief may not even need the physical card to start charging your account.

Early detection is key with identity theft - Protect yourself now!

In order to help consumers avoid such a scenario, some companies are providing credit monitoring services. These organizations basically report any unlikely or suspicious transactions from your credit file. Also, daily and weekly reports are available so you can be quickly aware of any unauthorized changes to your accounts.

Although the aforementioned services certainly can be useful, they don't do anything to stop charges from occuring, or your personal information from being otherwise misused - they just let you know afterward if these things have happened.

To provide an added measure of security for victims of this problem, a few insurance companies have begun offering identity theft insurance. The current charges for this identity theft insurance are relatively modest, dependent, of course on how much coverage you desire. Some companies charge $25 per year for coverage ranging from $15,000 to $25,000.

Individuals who have already undergone the lengthy process of identity theft repair are quite enthusiastic about the availability of identity theft insurance. They say that the insurance can prove to be quite a boon for anyone who has to spend money and several days (or frequently much more) missing work to straighten out an identity theft problem. Obviously, it's preferable to stop identity theft before it happens.

In the future it's possible that identity theft insurance may become as common as home and car insurance. Although the best adivice is to always be careful with how you handle your personal information, the possibility of a back-up plan like identity theft insurance is a reassuring thought to many people.
