Reporting Identity Theft - Why Does it Matter?

The threat of becoming another identity theft victim exists for every one of us – whether we have previously been victimized or not. While modern technology provides us with many advantages, it also gives dentity thieves the ability to obtain our personal information more easily. If you or someone you know has been victimized, there's no question that you should be reporting identity theft to the proper authorities as soon as possible.

Identity theft reporting really isn't that hard these days. The first step is to be aware of the potential of identity theft happening to you. There are particular items which, if lost, can place you in a high risk category.

Should your credit card be lost, you should promptly report it to the issuer so it can be cancelled and no one can charge their expenses in your name.

If it happens that you've lost documents that contain your Social Security number, you can call the authorities so that your account can be placed on an initial fraud alert, which can last up to 90 days, during which time, anyone else will be prevented from using your Social Security number for their own financial gain.

Early detection is key with identity theft - Protect yourself now!

The loss of items such as your driver’s license or company personal identification card should be reported to the issuing agency. Particulars may vary from one agency to the other, but reporting the loss in a timely manner is extemely important.

Usually, we find out about identity theft after the fact, such as if we notice unauthorized use of our credit card account. In addition to sorting out the problem with the involved companies, we recommend reporting identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission. They document identity theft cases, and this may aid in developing future legislation, as well as in providing information that may help prevent other cases of identity theft. There are also websites which are dedicated to the identity theft problem. This is why identity theft reporting is so important.

By taking care to properly report identity theft, we're fulfilling our responsibility as citizens and aiding the effort towards minimizing the occurence of this crime in the future.
