Identity Theft Tips You Can Use

Unfortunately, thieves have been very inventive in coming up with new ways to perpetrate identity theft. Since there are now so many different ways for identity theft to occur, it is imperative to try and learn any and all identity theft tips now, so we can be ready if the worst should ever happen. While there are some general rules of thumb that can be used in most situations, there might come a time when situation specific steps are needed. In these cases, having the knowledge beforehand can help to mitigate any damages that occur.

Should it be that you've incurred losses because of a lost or stolen ATM or debit card, there are things you can do. You should report the loss as quickly as possible in order to make sure that you are not held responsible for the losses. Reporting the loss within two business days usually means that your losses are limited to $50. If it takes you between two and sixty days, you could be responsible for as much as $500.

In cases of identity theft that result in debt collection proceedings against you, specific steps include alerting the company that you are not responsible for the debt, while including documentation. This documentation could include a police report or notarized affidavit stating that you have been a victim of identity theft. You are also within your rights in requesting that the company stop contacting you relating to the debt.

Student loans are another area where some particular steps can come in handy. Should it become apparent that someone has applied for a student loan in your name, you can contact the school or the loan institution to alert them of the fraud. You should also report it to the United States Department of Education.

The FTC is a good source of information regarding identity theft tips. While knowing these isn't going to make restoring your identity painless, they can help to you do it as quickly as possible.
