Identity Theft Comes in Different Forms

Recently, the incidence of identity theft has skyrocketed. Unfortunately, the results of identity theft can be far-reaching and linger for months or years. In these situations, it's frequently very difficult to identify the person who has commited the identity theft. A majority of people seem to view identity theft as only situations where someone's stolen Social Security number was used to apply for credit cards. This is one way that a person's identity can be stolen, however there are also many other ways to obtain personal info and use it to commit identity theft.

Obviously, the perpetrator of identity theft has one main goal, which is to use someone else's purchasing power for their own gain. They can use that power for many different things. Some identity thieves may get phone and other utilities in another person's name, usually because they can't apply for these services in their own name due to high debt or because they already owe the service provider money.

Identity thieves can also open a bank account in another person’s name and write bad checks on the account. Over time, these thieves have come up with more inventive ways to do this. Sometimes they will obtain a driver’s license in order to open a new checking account. Identity thieves have also come up with ways to create counterfeit checks.

Early detection is key with identity theft - Protect yourself now!

Additionally, an identity thief might even go so far as to file bankruptcy in your name after incurring a high amount of debt. This can have long-lasting implications as you might not become aware of the bankruptcy until it is too late.

It's always important to be alert to all the different ways that identity theft can occur. Awareness will help you to take action to make theft of your identity very unlikely, or take necessary actions in the unfortunate event that identity theft still happens to you.
